Frequently Asked Questions
DO YOU accept insurance? what type of payment do you accept?
The Scheiner Group is not an in-network provider for any insurance companies. Your insurance company likely provides out-of-network coverage and we can assist you in completing the necessary forms so that you can be reimbursed. Call your insurance company to learn more about your out-of-network behavioral health coverage.
We accept cash, personal checks, and credit cards. Payment is expected at the time of your appointment.
PHD, PSYD, MSW, LMHC--WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Essentially, the difference between these relates to the length and type of training. There are excellent therapists with different levels of training and it's important that you choose somebody who is a good fit for you. This article provides a little more information on the different degrees and training of mental health providers.
How long does psychotherapy last?
Great question. That depends on several factors that both clients and providers need to consider when we develop a treatment plan. The course of treatment varies, depending on the individual's needs. After initial evaluation (two or more sessions that occur before we move into the actual therapy), the modality we work in is called evidence-based psychotherapy, which is time-limited by nature: on average 12-16 sessions, which equates to roughly 3 or 4 months of weekly (sometimes biweekly) face-to-face interaction with me. Financial considerations are also a factor; that said, we will not take on clients with limited financial means if we do not think we can achieve a productive goal in the decreased session time available. We also provide low-fee community referral options if necessary.
What is it like working with you?
Another excellent question, but one that we can only provide a less-than-satisfying answer to. Psychotherapy is a different experience for everyone. However, there are some common processes and themes that arise. Usually you will talk about yourself while your provider listens and facilitates the talking. In the course of this, certain thoughts, feelings, and experiences will emerge. Depending on the approach mutually agreed upon, this information will be used to help better understand the nature of the problems you are experiencing now, as we work on building real-time strategies for addressing them. In most cases, you may be asked to begin practicing these strategies outside of sessions as well.
Do you offer an initial office consultation free of charge?
No. We bill for all face-to-face encounters, including the initial assessment and evaluation sessions. Dr. Scheiner offers a 15-minute, pre-initial meeting telephone discussion to assess fit for your needs, at which point we can schedule the initial office visit. We do not charge for this one-time telephone consultation.
DO YOU prescribe medication? how do you feel about medication?
Dr. Scheiner is a psychologist (not a psychiatrist) and does not prescribe medication. We work with prescribing professionals if we determine that you are in need of medication consultation. Many people who seek our services do not need medication; however, some benefit from evaluation by psychiatry to address symptoms that cannot be managed by psychotherapy alone. We are willing to discuss all treatment options available to you. If you have an outside prescribing provider or PCP, we may request your release to speak with this doctor about your care with us.
What languages do you provide your assessment or treatment services in?
We conduct evaluation, cognitive rehabilitation, and psychotherapy in a number of languages, based on the specific provider’s linguistic competencies (see our Team page). Dr. Scheiner provides services in English and French.
